Product Description
Product Overview

The UP-3014 is a digital pendulum impact tester designed for determining the Izod (cantilever-beam) impact strength of rigid plastics in accordance with ISO 180. It uses a high-resolution rotary encoder to measure both the lift angle and the residual swing angle directly. Energy absorption, correction for friction and windage losses, unit conversion and average-value statistics are all performed automatically, eliminating the interpolation errors inherent in mechanical dial reading.

This digital Izod impact tester is mainly used to measure the impact toughness of rigid plastic, reinforced nylon, fiberglass, ceramics, cast stone, insulation materials and other non-metallic materials.

Izod vs. Charpy: Test Geometry

The Izod impact test (ISO 180) is a cantilever-beam test: the specimen is clamped vertically at one end, and the pendulum strikes the free end. The Charpy impact test (ISO 179) is a simply supported beam test: the specimen is laid horizontally on two supports and struck at the middle. Both methods measure the impact toughness of rigid plastics, but the test geometry differs, and results cannot be interchanged.

The UP-3015 model can support both Izod and Charpy testing by changing fixtures.

Test Method

A notched specimen is clamped vertically with the notch facing the pendulum striker. Released from a fixed lift angle of 150°, the pendulum strikes the specimen at 3.5 m/s. The absorbed energy is measured automatically and reported as Izod impact strength in kJ/m² in accordance with ISO 180.
