How to choose PCT Chamber and HAST Chamber?

The choice depends on the testing purpose and product type:

When choosing PCT:
Test the inherent hydrolysis and corrosion resistance of the packaging material.
Evaluate the interface reliability of wire bonding, encapsulation resin, plastic encapsulation material, and lead frame.
Industry standards or customer specifications explicitly require PCT testing.
Considering cost, PCT equipment is usually cheaper than HAST.

When choosing HAST:
Requires extremely high acceleration factors to quickly obtain reliability data (commonly used in the research and development phase).
Test advanced, high-density integrated circuits (such as CPU and GPU with nanoscale processes).
It is necessary to detect failures related to electric fields such as electrochemical corrosion, metal migration, and gate oxygen breakdown.
A bias voltage needs to be applied for dynamic testing.

HAST can be simply understood as an upgraded version and advanced form of PCT.

PCT is like "slow simmering over low heat" with fixed conditions (121 ℃/100% RH), mainly testing the sealing performance of the package and the durability of the material, accelerating through water vapor condensation.

HAST is like a "fast fire stir fry", with more flexible and stringent conditions (higher temperature, unsaturated steam), extremely high acceleration efficiency, not only testing the packaging, but also exposing more subtle, electric field related failure mechanisms inside the chip, and usually applying bias voltage.

For many modern electronic products, HAST is gradually replacing PCT because it can detect problems faster. But for some traditional applications and material testing, PCT is still a reliable and cost-effective choice.
