This testing machine determines the coefficient of friction between footwear outsoles and flooring surfaces under conditions simulating the most critical parts of a typical walking step. The method is applicable to all types of footwear, outsole units, heel top pieces, sheet soling materials, and most types of floorings including matting and stair nosings.
A footwear outsole and flooring surface are brought into contact under a predefined force. After a short period of static contact, the footwear and flooring surface move relative to one another at a constant speed. The force required to move the surface is measured, and its value after a defined period divided by the contact force gives the coefficient of friction under the particular test conditions. Tests can be conducted dry or with water or other contaminants on the flooring surface.
