For automotive electronics manufacturers, selecting an environmental test chamber means matching both the test conditions and the laboratory workload.A larger chamber alone will not solve different testing conditon . A long humidity test can occupy a chamber while another project waits for temperature cycling.

Start with the component and its installation location

An electronic control unit, sensor, connector or power module should be assessed against its intended operating environment and customer requirements. ISO 16750-4:2023 addresses climatic loads for vehicle electrical and electronic systems and components, and links its recommended tests to the mounting location. It is a useful starting point for planning, not a universal test recipe — which tests you run is set by your customer specification and the mounting location.

Note the scope: beyond temperature and humidity, ISO 16750-4:2023 also covers salt spray, solar radiation, dust ingress, altitude and mixed flowing gas corrosion. Several need a dedicated chamber or a specific option, so list every test in your plan before sizing the equipment.

Match the humidity method to the test

For steady humidity exposure, IEC 60068-2-78:2025 (Test Cab) defines a damp-heat test at constant temperature without condensation on the specimen. Where the test calls for cyclic humidity with condensation on the surface, the method is IEC 60068-2-30:2025 (Test Db, 12 h + 12 h cycle). The two are not interchangeable: a chamber specified for non-condensing damp heat will not automatically deliver a condensing cyclic profile. Confirm the method, exposure duration, operating state and acceptance criteria before selecting equipment.

Choose capacity around the actual load

Do not select a chamber from its temperature range and internal volume alone. Share sample dimensions, fixture layout, cable feed-throughs and the heat dissipated during powered operation, and ask the supplier to confirm performance under that load, not an empty workspace.

Where temperature changes are required, distinguish the chamber air ramp rate from the specimen's temperature response — on a dense assembly the two differ widely. Agree how performance will be verified. If the plan calls for temperature cycling or thermal shock, name the method: IEC 60068-2-14:2023 covers Test Na (specified transfer time), Nb (specified rate of change) and Nc. A two- or three-zone transfer machine is different equipment from a single-chamber rapid-rate unit.

When multiple chambers make sense

Consider separate chambers when long-duration humidity exposure, temperature cycling and development work must run concurrently. Independent spaces support different profiles without interrupting another project. This is a workload-based choice, not a requirement imposed by the standards.

Before buying several units, compare throughput, test duration, profile compatibility and planned maintenance. Multiple smaller chambers offer scheduling flexibility; a larger chamber suits bulky assemblies or batches sharing one profile.

Turn the plan into a specification

Send your component type and dimensions, applicable standard with severities, samples per run, heat dissipated during powered operation, required temperature-humidity combinations, whether condensation is required, the temperature change method, and planned daily throughput. YOUBI Test Equipment will discuss a suitable environmental chamber configuration for your application. Confirm the model and options against the agreed test plan before ordering.
